A bettor profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro just before it was officially announced, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the event.
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion surged in the time leading up to former President Trump stated on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.
One account, which registered on the site last month and made four bets, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a modest bet of over $32,000.
It remains unclear. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Trading information shows that participants estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.
Yet the market's assessment had increased to eleven percent by the end of the day and surged in the first hours of the next day, indicating a rapid movement in market sentiment right before the public announcement was made.
"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.
Several of other platform users also earned tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.
Elected officials are growing concerned.
A new rule put forward on recently aims to prohibit federal workers from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.
Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in the past few years, with participants able to predict everything from sports to current affairs.
The industry faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.
Insider trading is against the law in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting industry.
An official representative for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
